The Ahwahnee, Historic Structures Report
Yosemite National Park

  • Northern California

In anticipation of a future rehabilitation at The Ahwahnee in Yosemite National Park, ARG prepared a set of comprehensive planning documents, a Historic Structures Report, a Cultural Landscape Report, and a Historic Furnishings Report. The Ahwahnee, an NHL, is significant for its site, setting, materials, design quality, craftsmanship, and artistic value. Designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood and completed in 1927, it remains a symbol of 1920s rustic style architecture on a grand scale. Nearly all spaces retain historic functions and high integrity. Designed in an 11 x 17 format enhanced by creative graphics, the reports were coordinated as complementary volumes. At nearly 400 pages, the HSR is illustrated with over 500 photographs. The reports synthesize large amounts of information using paired historic and current views and comparative floor plans for meaningful analysis.
