The Sunset Center has been the premier cultural and performing arts facility in the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea for almost 50 years. Originally built in 1925 as the Sunset School, it retained an education use until 1964. Then purchased by the City, it was converted to the Sunset Community and Cultural Center. In 1993, a public-private partnership began to transform the auditorium into a state-of-the-art performing arts center. ARG served as the prime architect for the complete upgrade and addition in collaboration with specialized consultants. Our approach was to design the expansion, incorporate new technology, and retain historic fabric and character. The most visible change is a grand new lobby which extends interior space to improve patron circulation and accommodate receptions. The Sunset Center reopened in 2003 to rave reviews.
