Channel Islands National Park: Scorpion Ranch

  • Southern California

Located on Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park, the historic and remote Scorpion Ranch served as an agricultural outpost. The complex includes a ranch house, bunkhouse, storage shed, and several other buildings. Constructed in 1886 of adobe and stone, the Scorpion Ranch house, a 2-story masonry structure, was originally used as a dining room, kitchen and dormitory for ranch hands. ARG prepared Historic Structure Reports (HSRs) and architectural design services for rehabilitation. The scope of work also included construction documents addressing adobe conservation, seismic strengthening, building code upgrades, and new uses to support NPS visitors. Of particular note is the remote site, construction logistics, and the need for upgraded site utilities, including photovoltaics, while conserving historic site conditions.
