Rancho Los Alamitos

  • Southern California

Rancho Los Alamitos is a portion of a 28,000-acre ranch operated by the Bixby family beginning in 1881. The 7.5-acre site includes the original nineteenth-century adobe ranch house, gardens, and ancillary buildings. Since 1986, ARG has completed a variety of projects including master planning, existing conditions surveys, rehabilitation and seismic strengthening of the adobe ranch house, ADA access, and the restoration of historic gardens.

Recent work includes site planning and landscape restoration. Four of the remaining historic barns were relocated to more accurately reflect their original arrangement. As part of the effort, each barn was restored and seismically strengthened. Historic landscape restoration includes the reconstruction of trellises, fencing, a duck pond, and small animal pens. Currently, ARG is rehabilitating a fifth historic barn to serve as a new Education Center.
