Presidio of San Francisco: Planning Studies/Assessments

  • Northern California

Converting the 1,400-acre Presidio of San Francisco from a military base into a national park presented a remarkable challenge. ARG provided the National Park Service with a number of resource studies falling into three categories: building surveys and inventories, historical studies, and cultural landscape analyses. Each study presents a clear picture of the broad spectrum of resources present within the Presidio and supports the planning efforts of the NPS. ARG conducted the studies in several phases, each expanding on previous work. The building inventories and surveys explored building types, typical problems, and potential reuses. The cultural landscapes chronicled the evolution of the area and assessed significant and sensitive features. ARG’s historical studies provided the most detailed and complete research to date, and aided in planning this National Park.
