San Francisco’s best example of the Streamline Moderne, the Maritime Museum, is located at Aquatic Park within the San Francisco National Maritime Historical Park, a National Historic Landmark District. Constructed by the Works Progress Administration, the building consists of the main bathhouse with galleries and loggia, two subterranean wings with showers and dressing facilities for bathers, bleacher seating, and an important green slate bas relief at the main entrance by sculptor Sargent Johnson. In recent years, ARG has carried out multiple projects for the National Park Service including conservation assessment and treatment for the slate sculpture, repair and restoration of the stainless steel-clad windows, comprehensive analysis of all building envelope components and contract documents for a comprehensive exterior envelope preservation effort.
