Aleutian WWII National Historic Area
The Aleutian World War II National Historic Area on Amaknak Island encompasses the historic footprint of the US Army base Fort Schwatka. The fort was one of four coastal defenses built to protect the harbors and waters of Unalaska during World War II. Few of the original 100 structures remain extant. At the request of the National Park Service, ARG conducted conditions assessments and materials investigations on five remaining concrete structures in the historic area. ARG tested and analyzed concrete and waterproofing materials in order to evaluate the cause and extent of the material deterioration. Treatments to stabilize material deterioration were developed in consideration of the severe environmental conditions. ARG also analyzed architectural issues relating to accessibility, rehabilitation, and site interpretation.
