The 5th Avenue Theatre
Seattle, Washington
The 5th Avenue Theatre opened in 1926 as a venue
for vaudeville. Designed by architect Robert C. Reamer and S. & G.
Gump Company’s chief designer, Gustav F. Liljestrom, the
theatre’s interior was modeled after three of ancient Imperial
China’s most significant architectural accomplishments: the
Forbidden City, the Temple of Heavenly Peace, and the Summer Palace.
Following the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, ARG surveyed
and prepared documents for the repair and restoration of the theatre’s
earthquake-damaged interior plaster, decorative paint finishes,
and cast plaster corbels. We prepared detailed survey plans, defined
repair solutions for the cracked and delaminated plaster and damaged
decorative paint finishes, and detailed the replication method
for the lost corbels.
